Writing on a train
A few years ago I wrote a paper titled Icelandic Coffee Shops and Wes Anderson Amorphous Time. Essentially the paper reflected on material culture in coffee shops + how "time-less" the shops feel. Today, I can't help but chuckle. Over break I embarked on a 33 hour train to visit family in Northern California + I typed the first words of my thesis on Iceland. I was Wes Anderson for Halloween. I am a character in his world, aren't I?
Anyways. This is an informal post, one to spread a smile. And one to muse on how amazing trains across the mountain ranges of America are, how amorphous they are, and how good for writing they are.
I learned a fair amount about humanity on that train. It helped me to think + to write.
Now I am back on campus, the real writing begins. Sometimes I don't know where this thesis will come from. Then I think back to the train or I talk with someone new about it, or I go for a walk. And I know that it will come.
